This past week I headed out to Deland with the 56 Camp. Hanging out for an entire week with fifth and sixth graders didn't sound all that fun to me. But IT WAS A FRICKEN BLAST!!!!! Seeing the world through another's eyes changes how you see the world. The last day of camp there was a video shown from One Life Revolution about Aids in Africa. One of the students leaned over to me and in his quite Innocent voice asked me "What is Aids and why is it in Africa?" How do you explain that, how do you explain whats happening in Africa, How do you explain why we, all the way over here in Tampa, should help remote villages in Africa, How do you explain why the kids on this video are orphans, How do you explain that? That question really made me think about why we do what we do as Christians. Last week I was in Tennessee jumping off random things with Revo peeps, this week I hiked back and forth on a college campus with 5th and 6th graders. Beginning of the summer Revo went to New Orleans, a few weeks ago we got 7th-12th graders to do random service projects throughout the city. Now here at this camp they talked about helping out the Aids crisis in Africa. And all of it fits under this simple idea, that we are servants to God, we are called to Love Him and Love Others. Such a simple idea that revolutionizing the world as we know it! And seeing God use both 35 yr olds and 11 yr olds for that same mission, that's what rocked my world this week! --Ken--

Hey Ken, I randomly came across your blog. I work with 5th graders (actually K-5th) and the mom side of me wants to shelter all of them from such horrible things going on in the world today but another side feels like those kids are ready to know. Allowing these kids to know what is going on gives them the chance to begin to hurt for those people and with feelings of such sadness over something of this nature they are possibly getting a vision for how they can help. Thanks for the post, it was really great!

Hey Kenny, I really enjoyed getting to know you on the trip. Your passion for God is inspiring. Check this out - today I was reading the bk "The World According to Mister Rogers," and I came across this quote. It brings home to me what you mentioned in your blog, "we are servants to God, we are called to Love Him and Love Others."
"Helen Ross was a good friend who taught teachers, doctors, and psychiatrists and consulted with professionals working with children and families all over the world. she was on of the great people of our age in the understanding of the dynamic development of human beings. After one operation for cancer and some subsequent therapy, Helen chose to refuse treatment when her cancer reappeared. One day when I visited her, I found Helen very frail... Helen said to me, "Do you ever pray for people, Fred? "Of course I do." So I said, "Dear God, encircle us with Thy love wherever we may be." And Helen replied, "That's what it is, isn't it? -it's love. That's what it's all about." Helen was eighty-eight when she died. She had spent most of her adult life working at understanding the complexities of human growth and development, and her summation of life was that love is what it's all about."
Fred Rogers
Isn't that the truth! Loving others IS what life is all about.
